Three Roses

Three Roses

THREE ROSES

Tanya White was in a hurry
She clutched her briefcase in her hand
She would miss her mother's birthday
She knew her Mum would understand

She was successful but so busy
Her time just seemed to fly
So many of life's pleasures
Now seemed to pass her by

She was at the top of her profession
But somehow she felt defeat
Her heart felt pangs of sadness
As she hurried through the street

She would miss her mother's birthday
And it shamed her to the core
She loved her mother dearly
And each day she missed her more

In her mind she saw her mother
Her face framed in hair of grey
She longed to hold her and caress her
But her mum lived miles away

She lived again her childhood
And her thoughts were going wild
Her mum had always been there for her
As a woman and a child

She stopped beside a flower shop
On this busy city street
Her thoughts became disjointed
Midst the sounds of pounding feet

She wandered in the flower shop
To send a big bouquet of flowers
But she longed to hug her mother
For her life of caring hours

Their relationship was special
It seemed their souls were joined as one
Her mother's life had been devoted
To her daughter and her son

And as the memories quickly gathered
They were cherished and compiled
Then suddenly beside her
She saw a young and tender child

The young girl was buying roses
And Tanya was impressed
To the girl they were a treasure
She held them closely to her breast

The girl seemed to hold a magic
Her little face just seemed to shine
She was small and very pretty
She was aged about just nine

Tanya ordered her bouquet
She had it sent to mum's address
And the young girl bought her roses
They seemed to glow to her caress

Tanya didn't mean to follow
But she felt she couldn't stop
The young girl drew her like a magnet
As she slowly left the shop

Tanya had to know the reason
Why three roses meant so much
So, with a smile and kindly greeting
Their souls were now in touch

Tanya asked about the roses
And why she treasured them so dear
"I buy these roses for my mummy
Although my mummy isn't here."

"Three roses mark the number
Of years that she's been gone
And each year I'll keep on counting
Until we're together later on."

"I think about my Mummy
Every minute of the day
She's always here beside me
Even though she's far away."

Tanya didn't press for answers
Instead, she took and held her near
They both knew the worth of mothers
Even when no longer here

They walked along in silence
Holding thoughts that were their own
Tanya's thoughts were for her mother
And how fast the years had flown

They stopped beside a graveyard
And the young girl said "Goodbye"
Tanya's heart cried out in silence
"Why do mothers have to die?"

"I come here every chance I get."
The young girl softly said
"And I pray beside her headstone
Because my mummy isn't dead."

"I know that mummy's with me
She's never far from sight
She's in every waking moment
And in my dreams at night."

"I must be brave for mummy
So I try to hide my pain
Because one day we'll meet in heaven
And I can hug her once again."

Tanya didn't want to leave her
But didn't know what she should do
So with faltering words she mumbled
"Can I visit your mum, too?"

As the young girl dropped upon her knees
She caressed the cold headstone
And fresh tearstains softly lined her face
She looked so small and so alone

And as the little girl was praying
She spoke words of love and care
And she spoke the words sincerely
For she believed her mum was there

The young girl was feeling
The tender love her mother gave
And with pride and pure devotion
She placed three roses on her grave

"Since you left us mummy
My daddy is so sad
We really miss you mummy
We miss you really bad."

"Daddy tries to hide his sadness
But at night he often cries
He can't hide the hurt he's feeling
It's a hurt he can't disguise."

"He is so caring and so gentle
But he has grief he just can't smother
Our home feels cold and really empty
Since the day we lost you, mother."

"Your smile would light up every morning
That's a thing I really miss
And the stories you would read me
And your tender goodnight kiss."

Tanya left the girl in silence
She felt drained and oh, so numb
She knew she now was an intruder
The girl was talking to her mum

And as Tanya left the graveyard
She felt her sadness mount
A little girl had shown her
The things in life that really count

The greatest treasures in this life
Are the people we love best
And we should savour every moment
until they're laid to rest

And we should tell them how we love them
And how much we hold them dear
And don't postpone it 'til tomorrow
Because one day they won't be here

Tanya bought her mum a locket
It was encased in gleaming pearl
The inscription announced proudly:
"From your loving Little girl".

She wouldn't miss her mother's birthday
She'd not hide her shame with sorrow
She'd go home to hold her mother
Her job could wait until tomorrow
