Jesus the Man

JESUS
JESUS THE MAN

He walked the earth that we now tread
A wise and gentle man
He spoke of peace, and love, and hope
As only Jesus can

You may not be a Christian
And I fall short of this
But if we lived his words of love
We'd live a life of bliss

Some say he was the son of God
While others say not so
And who is right and who is wrong
Perhaps we'll never know

Some claim that all religion
Has no place with modern man
Creation is a joke they say
And point to Darwin's plan

Some claim he's just a weakling's crutch
Their words are harsh and strong
But he mainly spoke of peace and love
So how can that be wrong?

He's helped to ease the troubled heart
He's helped to soothe the tears
His words of love live on today
They've lived two thousand years

No longer do I kneel in prayer
A truth I will not hide
My belief in God was weakened
When the one I loved had died

The mother of two children
She died aged twenty three
And I strongly felt resentment
That He'd forsaken me

I see young children dying
I see the earthquakes might
And many millions starving
How can this escape his sight?

For if there is a God above
And if his power is strong
He'd look down on this troubled world
And right so much that's wrong

The grapes of Christianity
Have withered on my vine
I've lost the faith that warmed me
And I know the loss is mine

Yet when I walk with nature
I feel an inner light
And though I may deny it
I know God's still in sight

And the silent voice within me
That tells me how to love
I feel certain that it emanates
From somewhere up above

And if there is a God above
I'm just a mortal man
How could I conceive his wisdom
And conceive his Godly plan?

My faith is badly shaken
Yet deep within I find
I'm just a damn agnostic
Who can't make up his mind

I'm just a plain and simple soul
Few men would call me wise
But I've seen the true believers
And the light that's in their eyes

And in this world of toil and stress
Of terror, pain, and grief
I salute the true believers
And envy their belief

And despite the staunchest skeptic
There is truth beyond compare
That the hardest heart will soften
When a child is knelt in prayer

The teachings of the Bible
Are debated every day
And what the final truth is
I'm not wise enough to say

The word 'God' means so many things
We won't know 'til we die
If it's just describing 'nature'
Or a Spirit in the sky

But those who smirk at Christians
Are on very shaky ground
They can't laugh at a 'Creator'
'Til more proof has been found

The beauties we call 'Nature'
Are there for all to see
And to claim they weren't 'created'
Sounds a trifle false to me

Though I confess I'm not a Christian
In the true sense of the word
To claim that life 'just happened'
Well, I find that quite absurd

Science claims to have the knowledge
Of how life on Earth began
But despite their brilliant theories
They can't create a man

They've produced a clone of animals
With tissues and some tricks
But that's akin to building houses
After God supplied the bricks

We have so many 'miracles'
That science can't explain
And when they try to reproduce them
Their efforts are in vain

I admire the scientific mind
And the 'break-throughs' it can bring
But without existing elements
It can't produce a thing

To produce 'Perpetual Motion'
Man has failed in every way
Yet this old Earth keeps on spinning
In 'Perpetual Motion' every day

And the planets of our Solar system
Make their regular run
Whirling in 'Perpetual Motion'
As they travel 'round the Sun

There are other things that puzzle me
But the answers I can't find
And until I have those answers
I'll keep an open mind

And the theories of Charles Darwin
The only thing they prove
Is that 'Mother Nature' never sleeps
She's always on the move

As life moved through its stages
New challenges were solved
Mother Nature made the changes
That's how life on Earth evolved

When I write of 'Mother Nature'
You might find my reasoning odd
But 'til I have the proof I'm seeking
Mother Nature is my God

There is a 'Power' that governs
But what that 'Power' might be
Is beyond the limitations
Of a simple man like me

And it's not just Christianity
That has its smirking clan
A belief in 'God' has blossomed
Since the early stage of man

And although all these religions
Don't share the same belief
Those who try to steal it from them
Are the lowest form of thief

Whether Christian, Buddhist, Hindu
Animatist, Islam or Jew
They have a right to their belief
The same as me and you

And Atheists should enjoy the right
To their different point of view
At least they've thought about it
And that's more than some will do

And for the many in this modern age
Who hold no view at all
I think your life is very empty
And your thinking rather small

I didn't want to write this poem
Religion makes some tempers hot
When I was asked to write of Jesus
At first, I thought I'd better not

But the emails kept on coming
And although my mood was grim
I took up pen and paper
And commenced to write of him

But I found myself restricted
For my faith is not profound
When I write about religion
I walk unsteady ground

I could have dodged this touchy subject
And refused to write of it
But although I'm not a wise man
I'm not a hypocrite

Perhaps I'll disappoint believers
And the non-believers too
And if 'Just Verse' should be ended
That judgement's up to you

Because if I've upset too many
I'll do what's only right
You'll never read my words again
I'll simply close this site

But I believe in this man Jesus
And that he really walked this earth
That the words he spoke were wisdom
And they've been of constant worth

And the presence of this Jesus
Is with us still today
This earth would be a darker place
Had he not passed our way

They nailed him to a wooden cross
His head was crowned with thorn
They watched him die a painful death
And treated him with scorn

A gentle man who spoke his truth
And tried to show the way
But some men feared the prophet's words
They fear them still today

And whether he was man or God
Is cloaked neath 'Mystery's Shawl'
But he preached the words of peace and love
And I applaud them all
