A Box of Junk

Box of Junk

A BOX OF JUNK

This was to be her special day
But tears brimmed in her eyes
Disappointment clasped her tender face
The kind you can't disguise

It was their thirtieth anniversary
These things mean so much to girls
He had joked that he'd present her
With some imitation pearls

The pearls were not important
They had such wedded bliss
But a thirtieth anniversary
Should have started with a kiss

The subject wasn't mentioned
In their usual 'breakfast' talk
He had pecked her cheek so casually
Then gone out "for a walk"

Conversation had been stilted
Her anniversary dreams were dead
He'd forgotten what she'd asked for
Just a cup of tea in bed

He had always been so thoughtful
So, how could he forget?
Still, the day was only early
Perhaps he'd remember yet

He was such a loving husband
She should not be asking more
Then her thoughts were interrupted
By a loud knock on the door

But much to her amazement
There was not a soul in sight
Just a red rose and a tiny box
Bound with ribbon blue and bright

With trembling hands she opened it
But then her spirits sunk
For all that tiny box contained
Was just some worthless junk

It held a sea shell and a pencil
A feather, comb and string
There was not one thing of value
Not a solitary thing

There was a bangle and a safety pin
But with a closer look
She found hidden under blades of grass
His cherished old prayer book

And nestled 'neath the prayer book
Was a carefully wrapped C.D.
Its label simply stated
"My Darling, Please Play Me"

And as she played that C.D.
With every word she heard
Her husband bared his soul to her
She cherished every word

"I have a string of genuine pearls
And for weeks I've been a wreck
As I wait with such excitement
To place them 'round your neck."

"That jeweller sure confused me
I wasn't sure what I should do
Though he said pearls are traditional
Diamonds are accepted too."

"This day is very special
And I want your heart to sing
So I have a string of pearls for you
And a sparkling diamond ring."

"The contents of this tiny box
Don't look too dignified
But I chose each one so carefully
For the thing they signified."

"The blue ribbon states for love and care
You take the champion's prize
But the colour looks so faded
To the blue within your eyes."

"The feather shows the softness
That you carry in your heart
The string is for the tie that binds
To prove we'll never part."

"The single rose will signify
I have no place for gloom
From the first time that I kissed you
My life has been in bloom."

"And that cheap plastic bangle
Is a circle that I send
It's a line that is unbroken
For a love that has no end."

"You will notice there's a pencil
Well, I've given it to you
To write boldly in the book of life
Our love is deep and true."

"That tiny, battered prayer book
Is there to simply state
That my prayers have all been answered
By a perfect, loving 'mate'."

"The plastic comb just signifies
A truth I always knew
If I combed this whole world over
I wouldn't find another you."

"That safety pin is so important
I've saved it all these years
The memory that it carries
Can still bring me to tears."

"I can see the love upon your face
And the tender way you smiled
As you carefully pinned the napkin
Upon our first born child."

"And that small but precious little shell
I gathered at the sea
It was a memory I would cling to
If you ever tired of me."

"I've saved it through these thirty years
Since that precious night in June
When we strolled along a star-lit beach
To start our honeymoon."

"It now represents the oceans
Of love you have inside
And the sea of happiness I feel
When you are by my side."

"Last night while you were sleeping
With the cunning of a fox
I gathered those few tufts of grass
To place within the box."

"This grass grew near a park bench
And I suppose that you will guess
Its that very self-same park bench
Where you finally answered 'Yes'."

"I hope that you will understand
That this box with all its stuff
Is my clumsy way of saying
Thirty years is not enough."

"For my love for you keeps growing
And If my wish comes true
I'll not just have these thirty years
But all my life with you."

"Now, please don't keep me waiting
You know where I will be
I'll be sitting on that park bench
That means so much to me."

In a picture frame upon the wall
Is a happy, smiling bride
But her tear stained eyes could only see
The husband at her side

His voice had trembled with emotion
With every word he said
The box of 'junk' would be her treasure
Through all the years ahead

She quickly dressed and combed her hair
Then dried her tear-stained face
She had an errand most girls dream of;
A perfect husband to embrace

Pearls and diamonds may be precious
But that box towered high above
It held value beyond measure
It expressed her husband's love.
