Mary Jane

Mary Jane

MARY JANE

A gentle, grey haired lady
She was well known in our town
Folks spoke about her broken heart
And her unused wedding gown

Everybody knew her story
How her mind broke from the strain
Sympathy was never lacking
For the tragic Mary Jane

Kind people understood her
And preserved her fantasy
When she claimed the month was April
Kind people would agree

She had stopped the clock within her mind
The truth too hard to bear
Her mind refused reality
She saw people who weren't there

She would converse with all her bridesmaids
Though many had passed on
She would not admit their passing
She would not admit they'd gone

Her wedding gown hung in a closet
She kept it spotless clean
And the small bows that adorned its back
Were neat and so pristine

Each day to gently air her dress
She'd place it on a stand
Her wedding was her every dream
It was going to be so grand

Her mind remained in April
It would not move on to May
And through all the years that followed
It was April sixth each day

It was the seventh day of April
That started all her strife
A wayward car ran off the road
And claimed her loved one's life

They were so in love it broke her
It took all she had to give
Her heart refused the future
It had robbed her will to live

For a time she was despondent
Then one day she wore a smile
It seemed to all the town folk
She'd again found life worthwhile

But her mind was only hiding
It was not as it appeared
Her mind and heart were hiding
From the future that she feared

Her sister tried to help her
But she refuted every word
She insisted that she'd marry
On April, twenty third

For years we'd see her walking
Clinging to her sister's arm
She'd smile 'Hello' to everyone
She had her own sweet charm

She would talk about her boyfriend
Arthur was his name
And though her parents didn't like him
They would marry just the same

They had gone through school together
They had won each others heart
They lived only for each other
They were seldom seen apart

She couldn't wait to start her family
She said they'd start it straight away
And her face lit up with gladness
Watching children at their play

That her boyfriend was still living
Her mind would hold no doubt
She kept a list of baby's names
And carefully picked some out

Each night was painful for her sister
For Mary would insist
That they check the invitations
To see if someone had been missed

From the time before that fateful day
Her mind would not depart
A life completely wasted
By an aching, breaking heart

Her mind trapped in that time zone
Trapped in its self made cell
She had loved her man completely
Perhaps she'd loved too well

Just before she left this mortal life
Those praying for her said
She began to talk to Arthur
She claimed he stood there at her bed

It could have been hallucination
But her face was so aglow
Perhaps Arthur was there with her
That's a thing we'll never know

She now has peace eternal
Her heart freed from its stress
And on the day they buried her
She wore her wedding dress

She is now at rest with Arthur
She is buried at his side
At last she has her husband
And Arthur has his bride
