Reminiscing

Reminiscing
REMINISCING

Where shady willows sweep the banks
Of a sparkling sunlit stream
An old man sits in silence
And his mind begins to dream

For in this place his mind runs free
The years are not clouded in mist
This place holds many sweet memories
This eden where first they had kissed

His dreams take him back to a long ago
When love was in the air
He thinks of the girl who won his heart
A girl beyond compare

How lithe was her youthful figure
She walked with a flowing grace
So soft was the touch of her silken hair
And the beauty that shone from her face

How light were their hearts in those carefree days
When the world was so fresh and new
How sweet is the wonderful memory
When she shyly murmured "I do"

Together they travelled a lifetime
Through many a hardship and pain
And though the dark clouds gathered
Their love always kept out the rain

They lost their son in a senseless war
Depression swept in like a tide
But whenever he feared he would falter
She stood like a rock at his side

She gave him the courage to face the world
When the future looked dark and grim
She refused to submit to her grief and doubts
So she could look after him

He tenderly clasped her tiny hands
As she sat on the bank by his side
For he knew that he had found heaven
The day he had made her his bride

Her youthful body had vanished
The years had torn it apart
But her face possessed even more beauty
A beauty that springs from the heart

Her gentle hands were now wrinkled
Her hair had long turned to gray
And though he had loved that youthful girl
He loved her much more today

Their love shone out like a beacon
A light for the world to see
A love that had grown every passing year
And would last through eternity
