The Runaway

Personal Page

Forgive me for having the impudence to include a personal pages on this site.
These are just a few of the numerous poems I have written at various times
while thinking about people who have enriched my life.

THE RUNAWAY
For Brenda and Trish
Our special friends in England.

The Runaway

Brenda suggested to her daughter
That it now was time for bed
But little Trish protested
And a few sharp words were said

Little Trish informed her mum
That she now could stay up late
She said she was almost grown up
After all, she'd just turned eight

A discussion then ensued
Producing great debating skill
Though they loved each other dearly
They would test each other's will

Trish then informed her mum
She was big enough to roam
And if she didn't get her way
Then she would run away from home

When her mother wouldn't yield
Trish made a solemn vow
She was not only leaving home
But she was leaving home right now

Trish hastily packed her travel bag
With the necessary wares
The travel bag was overflowing
With her precious teddy bears

Young Trish was determined
Her attitude quite wild
It was ridiculous a girl of eight
Should be treated like a child

Her resolve was very serious
Trish would not take any more
But Brenda waited patiently
On the step of their front door

Trish could not help noticing
Her mother's loving smile
So she reluctantly agreed
To stop and chat a while

There was another pressing reason
Why young Trish chose to stop
Her mum said she might get thirsty
And gave her a glass of pop

Trish had always known her mother
Was so full of love and care
So she commenced to tell her mother
Of the things that just weren't fair

With the confidence of childhood
Trish took her mother's hand
And with patience and persistence
Tried to make mum understand

The things were fair that she demanded
There was no need for debate
Because girls grow up so quickly
They're young adults when they reach eight

Brenda listened with a soft heart
To her daughter's woes and cares
But had to smile each time she noticed
That bag packed with teddy bears

As they sat there on that doorstep
Discussing things so seriously
It evokes imagination
Of how sweet that scene would be.

Brenda knew that Trish was bluffing
This dispute they'd rise above
Because they shared life's greatest treasure
The treasure of true love

Young Trish would gain real wisdom
A valued lesson she would find
A mother knows what's best for children
And you can't change a mother's mind

After some time in discussion
Trish decided that she'd stay
She had a loving family
And she couldn't run away

Their very brief dispute
Had an ending so ideal
The mother promised sausage sandwiches
The young girl's favourite meal

The years fly by so quickly
And Trish is fully grown
She now can choose her bed time
She has two daughter's of her own

And with a wide grin I am wondering
If perhaps some future day
Amber or young Lucy
Threaten that they'll run away

I am confident that Trish
Will treat the problem very well
Then in later years, she too
Will have a story she can tell

Too many happy moments
Quickly age and then depart
But not these moments with our children
We keep them fresh within our heart

Some say our childhood is our best years
And yet it seems to me
When your life is blessed with children
That's as good as life can be
