A BIRTHDAY WISH
She sits alone in her garden And alone she passes her day Her face is lined by her ageing years Her hair is a silvery gray She thinks again of her only child And her eyes are misted with tears It was long ago that they had harsh words Where has he been all these years? He had made a mistake as young men do When their manhood has just begun But her angry words had cut to the core And through them she lost her son Though her words were born from her love and care The boy's heart was filled with pain He stole away in the still of night And she never would see him again She remembered today was her birthday Her years were hurrying by She yearned in vain for her long lost son And gently began to cry Her frail hands clasped a photo She pressed it close to her heart Her darling boy was her pride and joy And yet they had drifted apart She had little in life to cling to And she prayed for her end to come Then a voice from behind murmured softly "Happy birthday mum."
