Football Hero

Football Hero
FOOTBALL HERO
( For Jammie )

He was once a football hero
A 'star' of great renown
His name was known in cities
And in every country town

In almost every game he played
He displayed such skilful feats
That the crowd would cheer him wildly
And rise up from their seats

He wore the most expensive suits
He drove the flashiest cars
He was welcomed in the night clubs
And greeted in the bars

But above the noise and clatter
Stood the real love in his life
A fresh faced girl named Julie
His best friend and his wife

He had his group of 'hangers on'
They clung on like a rash
They filled his ears with empty praise
And helped him spend his cash

He rode the heights of stardom
A roller coaster ride
He lived life like a whirlwind
And spent less time with his bride

There were lots of flighty women
Content to share his bed
It broke the heart in Julie
Yet not a word she said

He started drinking heavily
That's when her patience sunk
She had watched a father that she loved
Die a hopeless drunk

She voiced her ultimatum
And she saw it made him grieve
Either slow down on his drinking
Or she threatened she would leave

His pride was badly shaken
And she heard his angry shout
ìI'll drink how much I bloody please"
And that's when she walked out

They were words he'd spoke in anger
He was sure they'd never part
And that day when Julie left him
She walked out with his heart

He sank into the bottle
He filled his life with booze
He had lost his greatest treasure
He had nothing left to lose

With the life that he was living
Of women, booze and pills
His fitness soon deserted him
And so did all his skills

His club no longer wanted him
He couldn't make the team
His glory days had ended
And so had every dream

He slumbered in the streets at night
His world had come unwound
And the 'hangers on' who'd praised him
There was not one to be found

He had slumped down on the sidewalk
As he'd done often in the past
He knew his health was failing
And he knew it couldn't last

Then he felt a soft hand touch his face
And though the light was dim
He could see a precious angel
She was looking down at him

He knew the angel was his Julie
And though he'd caused her so much strife
She had pushed the past behind her
And she'd come to save his life

She took him home and nursed him
And cleared away his pain
He made himself a solemn vow
He'd not hurt her again

He returned again to football
And again he thrilled the crowd
He was still a football marvel
And they sang his praise out loud

With women and the 'hangers on'
He had no time to waste
And he didn't need the alcohol
In fact, he'd lost the taste

His life is now completed
With a handsome baby boy
And with his Julie at his side
The three know only joy

He owes it all to Julie
She picked him up when he was beat
If she'd not reached out to save him
He'd be a drunkard on the street

Though he's still a football hero
They're soon forgotten in this life
Now he worships his own hero
And that hero is his wife
