CITY LIGHTS
From a balcony I'm gazing At the city far below I can see the busy highway And it's heavy traffic flow It is fast approaching midnight And the car lights seem to make The writhing, angry, image Of a giant florescent snake And the brightness of the city Has a brilliance from this height With it's brazen, flashing neons And buildings flush with light Though the city's bathed in brightness There's a life that we don't know There's a world of stress and sadness beneath the city's glow There are many who know heartbreak But their spirit bravely fights As they struggle for survival Beneath those city lights I have pity for the street kids Each night you'll see them roam And I guess they all have reasons For why they left their home And whether they were right or wrong I still find it a sin That some will ease their hunger from a filthy garbage bin A lonely 'hooker' plies her trade From shadows on the street She risks her life each evening As she walks her lonely beat And I will not sit in judgement On the life that she has chose For I'm sure she has a story And it's one she only knows And on deserted sidewalks beyond the glaring light The homeless dare to slumber Safely out of sight Perhaps some kind of hardship Each one of us could meet Has wrecked their life completely And cast them on the street While illegal migrant women Will slave throughout the night In dingy, ill lit 'sweat shops' To try to ease their plight They've escaped their country's torments To find a better way But their boss knows they're 'illegals' And gives pittance for their pay And the desperate, hopeless addict Who was once a different man Must often pause to ponder How his life of grief began Perhaps his 'habit' started From some stupid, senseless dare Or perhaps his weakness surfaced When his life was in despair And there's women who have lost their way For they're addicted too And they walk the endless streets at night They've nothing else to do They wear the same expression A haunted look upon their face The dangerous drugs of mankind Have plunged them in disgrace While the city lights resemble A glowing fairyland It hides the desperation of those who need a hand There are countless signs of heartbreak And countless hopeless sights And they feel no warmth or comfort Beneath those city lights And there's many homeless animals That walk the city street I feel anger and resentment At the fate they're sure to meet Their owners simply dumped them Now they spend their lonely nights Striving for their sad existence Beneath those city lights I feel an overwhelming sadness Though I know we're not to blame For the misery beneath the lights That hides a city's shame If my life had been much different I wonder where I'd be A face beneath those city lights Could belong to me I hope some day some miracle Will free them from their strife That fate will smile upon them And give them all a better life But I know I'm just a dreamer And my dreams take unreal flights StilI, I worry for those struggling Beneath those city lights K.D.
