The Bushland

The Bushland
THE BUSHLAND

Evening shades at sundown
A cooling summer breeze
The city far behind me
That's when my heart's at ease

To rest upon a grassy bank
And softly breathe a sigh
As I gaze upon a crystal stream
That silently floats by

To sit in contemplation
In a restful, drowsy mood
Where thoughts can flow unhalted
And the 'world' can not intrude

In the distance sheep are grazing
In their snowy coats of fleece
And though it's just illusion
The whole world seems at peace

The quietness that surrounds me
Is the source where peace begins
And the human world can't harm me
With it's violence, greed, and sins

And my old dog's gently dozing
With his head upon my knee
He embraces all the goodness
Of what heaven means to me

The pine trees gently swaying
To the orchestra of life
This peaceful bushland setting
Frees my soul from every strife

I can hear a song bird singing
Perched high up in a tree
And my heart is prone to fantasise
He's singing just for me

And across the sleepy waters
Close on the other side
A kangaroo observes me
With her 'Joey' at her side

She is puzzled by my presence
Though she shows no sign of fear
As she asks the silent question
"What's that dreamer doing here?"

The fragrance of the wildflower
Floats on the evening air
I breathe it's magic tonic
It's a joy beyond compare

I recline upon the cool, green grass
My vision cast on high
The earliest tiny stars appear
To light the evening sky

I can see old mother possum
I could swear I heard her sigh
She's becoming quite impatient
That it's time I said goodbye

She want's to come down from the tree
To find her evening meal
She can't guess that I wont harm her
She can't know the love I feel

For in this bushland setting
And the peace that it can bring
I absorb the warmth of nature
And it's where my heart takes wing

You have to understand the bush
To feel how much it gives
I was born out in the country
And it's where my spirit lives
