The Sea

The Sea

THE SEA

Gossamer clouds show sparkling white
In the blue of a summer sky
And slowly but ever so gracefully
The gulls go gliding by

The air is scented with Neptune's spice
The salt of the restless sea
And crystal sands that glitter with pride
Are forever beckoning me

Like prancing white steeds the foaming waves
Come charging to the shore
They've thundered in through the ages
And they will for ever more

Armoured shellfish sidle away
And hide any place they can
They press so close in the cleft of rocks
They resent the intrusion of man

The soft sand sinks beneath my feet
As I wade along the shore
Tiny waves quickly cover my tracks
To hide that I've walked there before

The sounds are varied and many
An orchestral wonderland
Mother nature's conducting the music
And her baton is firmly in hand

Endless ribbons of seaweed
Grope hopelessly for the shore
And just as it seems they will reach it
They're pulled back to sea once more

I sit on a rock at the water's edge
And contentment is nurturing me
The water playfully swirls and sways
It's the dance of the magical sea

A lighthouse stark against the blue
It's clad in a pure white gown
It warns of the dangers of hidden reefs
Where many a ship went down

A tourist boat far out to sea
Happy passengers on its deck
Too soon it is lost to my vision
It becomes a vanishing speck

But it has started my mind to wandering
For a dreamer ever I'll be
And soon I'm lost in my private world
And the wonders of the sea

History's book is opened wide
And I turn its treasured page
With the gift of imagination
I am back in another age

I can see a 'jolly roger'
Flapping proudly in the breeze
Through the eyes of a child, my mind runs wild
I can see anything that I please

I see the locker of Davy Jones
And the treasures it hides so well
And the countless mysteries still unsolved
They're his secret, and he wont tell

A galleon rests at anchor
And further out to sea
A fleet of tall ships sailing by
It seems so real to me

Two ships assail each other
With cannons of flaming fire
This real world can no longer hold me
I can dream to my hearts desire

I am on the ship 'Endeavour'
I'm on deck with the captain and crew
When first they sighted this untamed land
The land of the kangaroo

But a crashing wave on the rock where I sit
Resounds with a shattering din
My daydreams have left me stranded
The tide is rolling in

So I paddle ashore in water knee deep
Of regret, I haven't a trace
As the waves at my back gently nudge me
There's a childish smile on my face

I have sailed on ships of yesteryear
I have watched as their sails were set
And the price I paid for this journey?
Only my legs got wet
