THE HORSE
You may see him grazing peacefully In a field that is lush and green And little you think of the struggles This servant of man has seen His life is so very different now His battles have all been won But think of the challenges he endured When settlement first begun He may canter around in a show ring now As a gentle ladies hack Or he may herd sheep or cattle On a peaceful outback track But he has ventured deep in coal mines He has pulled a milkman's cart He is known for many a wondrous deed But mostly he's known for his heart He helped to tame the virgin land When he ploughed the rock strewn field And though he toiled 'til his heart might burst His spirit would never yield He cleared the path where roads now wind And where mighty buildings tower And great is the debt that we owe him For his courage, his spirit, his power He carried our soldiers in battle He shared in their heartbreak and pain And though death filled the air all around him Still he charged yet again, and again No braver heart has ever dwelt Beneath the mortal flesh No will of iron has laboured more To keep the spirit fresh He carried the settler's children to school From a cottage or lonely shack And safe and proud was the child who rode On this faithful servant's back He has made the dash in the midst of night With a sickly child or wife And with daunting speed and sureness of tread He has saved a fading life Neath driving rain or scorching sun In frosts or winter snow Through blinding scrub and mountains tall He has gone where we bade him to go He has met every challenge we gave him His efforts were seldom in vain And if ever the need arises He will answer the call once again So next time you see him standing at rest So carefree and serene Think not of the life he is living now But the life that his breed has seen K.D.
