POEMS FOR CHILDREN
And their wonderful world of imagination
(Especially for Lucy. ) Snails have real short memories And because their memory fails To ensure they find their way back They paint little silver trails They make their paint of silver At very little cost They leave the painted track behind them To ensure they don't get lost All snails are forgetful And that's why you're sure to find That every time you see a snail They've left a silver trail behind The adults go out each evening To enjoy a little snack And in case they do get lost They take their home upon their back Snails are very clever As you can easily tell They can scrunch their body up And hide it right inside their shell They like to dine on plants That's something gardeners won't permit But I think I've heard snails begging "Can't we have a little bit?" I keep a small snail in my pocket And I put him out each night But one night when I forgot It gave my mum an awful fright It was too late when I remembered The dark of night had crept So I placed him 'neath my pillow And that's where my small snail slept Next morning I told mummy And she rushed to search my bed She searched the pillows and the blankets But my little snail had fled Mum searched right throughout my bedroom I feared my snail had died We searched all the many places Where small snails like to hide The more we searched the house The more my mummy seemed to frown By the time that she stopped searching She'd turned the whole house upside down My mummy finally had to stop Her energy was spent And although we'd searched for hours We didn't know where my snail went Then sunlight glistened through the window And I spied a silver trail And where the silver paint trail ended I found my precious snail K.D.
