Farmers Friend

The Farmer's Friend
THE FARMER'S FRIEND

The old man's face was creased in thought
His dog trailed at his heel
And all the doubts the old man felt
His dog could plainly feel

He gazed across his dried out spread
The scene was pretty bleak
Not much water in the dams
And little in the creek

The old dog licked his master's hand
As if to soothe his fears
The farmer knelt to stroke his head
His eyes were moist with tears

"You're the only friend I really have."
The old man softly sighed.
"You know I'm nearly ruined
Yet you're steadfast by my side."

"If we don't get rain within the week
Our farm will surely fail."
And to show his understanding
The old dog wagged his tail

"The bank's refused another loan
They know I'm deep in strife."
"And I've no one else to talk to
Since I lost my loving wife."

"But you listen to my problems
And I've come to realise
That you understand each word I speak
I see it in your eyes."

As they left the bottom paddock
The old man closed the gate
And with a sad and wistful voice
again spoke to his mate

"If we just could get some decent rain,
We'd make it through the drought."
"But, according to predictions,
There ain't no rain about."

Just then they heard the thunder
Dark clouds began to form.
"By cripes." The old man chuckled.
"We're gonna have a storm!"

The rain came down in torrents
They walked home soaking wet
The old man laughed aloud with glee
"We'll beat those bankers yet!"

The old dog caught the farmer's joy
And with his spirits up
He pranced around in puddles
Like a silly, playful pup

When they reached the farm verandah
They were soaked through to the skin
But neither made to move inside
They stayed to drink it in

"The creek's already flooded."
The old man laughed with cheer.
"This rain has washed away all doubt;
We'll last another year."

The rain teemed down throughout the night
And then it turned to hail
The old man lit his favourite pipe
The old dog wagged his tail
